Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for most male characteristics.
For men, it regulates sex drive and fat distribution, increases bone and muscle mass, improves strength and increases the production of red blood cells and sperm.
About this Testosterone Blood Test Plus
Total testosterone is an indicator of the total amount of testosterone in the blood.
If low it can cause symptoms of testosterone deficiency such as low libido, reduced muscle mass and strength, and low mood.
Free testosterone is a calculated value that indicates the amount of testosterone free to be used by the cells in the body. In some cases total testosterone can be normal whilst free testosterone is low. In these cases a man with low free testosterone will experience the same symptoms as someone with low total testosterone.
This is normally because there are higher levels of hormones such as SHBG (sex binding hormone globulin) which binds to testosterone preventing it from being used by the body.
Oestradiol is a predominantly female hormone found in smaller amounts in men. If high it can lead to similar symptoms to low testosterone.
Please note: we require two blood test results, a full blood count (FBC) and a lipid screen to provide treatment – this is in line with current guidelines. Our enhanced blood test meets provides a full set of tests including full blood count (FBC) and lipids.
We are currently recommending that all blood test samples should be sent back recorded next day delivery due to postal delays during the Covid-19 crisis.
We can accept most blood results from other sources, please contact us to check.
We also require documentation of prostate examination results for men over the age of 45 before starting treatment.
